Early Years & Teacher Training

Training & Support for workers in the community

We believe the work you do with children and families is incredibly important. We also acknowledge the challenges you might face that require a collaborative approach and working in partnership.

Family Matters provides Early Years & Teacher Training and workshops to support the work you do, so that all our endeavours together support children and families to reach their potential.

Emotional health and wellbeing in children give a foundation for happiness, participation and stability. The Introduction to the Solihull Approach is a 2-day evidence-based course that helps workers understand and build emotional health in children. We also work on supporting parents in a consistent and practical way.

Who can participate in the Introduction to Solihull Approach course?

We welcome employees from the following sectors:

  • Community
  • Education
  • Health
  • Social
  • Sectors that contribute to child and family wellbeing

At the end of the 2-day course you will have learned methods of supporting children and parents with:

  • Brain development
  • Containment
  • Reciprocity
  • Behaviour management
  • Self-care from a Solihull perspective
  • Ways to integrate this approach into your practice, school or service

Decision making, emotions, feelings, and friendships are profoundly impactful especially for children and teenagers. They are prone to influence and peer pressure and guidance from people they trust is essential.

The Botvin Training Programme supports educators to build coping and decision-making skills in children and teenagers. Training is available to deliver the Botvin programme to children from 4th class to 6th class (Essential level) and 1st year to 3rd year (Advanced level).

Over 500 students a year in Ballyfermot take part in the programme that empower them to:

  • Resist peer pressure especially around smoking, drugs and alcohol
  • Cope with challenges
  • Communicate clearly
  • Build friendships
  • Make healthy choices
  • Advocate for themselves

Our Senior Speech and Language Therapists work with practitioners in early years services and schools to support staff becoming Communication Champions in their settings. We provide training and support in a number of areas including:

  • Eklan Speech and Language Support – Learn how everyone in a child’s network can actively support their ability to communicate.
  • TalkBoost – Learn how to deliver the evidenced based Talkboost programme with small groups of children in Early Years education or primary school.
  • Communication Champions – Learn how to be the advocate and champion for language development and boosting in the whole school community.

The Family Matters Team supports staff across the community in learning communities of practice, including:
