What We Do
Being out of work for a while can make it hard to find a way back. Employers can question a gap in your CV, you might feel a bit rusty and your confidence could have dipped. Tús work placements help you overcome those issues while doing something for your community.
Tús is a 12-month part-time work placement in your local area. You work for 19.5 hours a week with a local community or voluntary organisation and get a boost to your social welfare payment.
You also get to keep any other social payments you currently have. Your job can be flexible around childcare, school runs and family obligations if that is what you need.
What are the benefits for you?
The Tús programme is for anyone on Jobsseekers Allowance for 12 months or more. You can also join Tús if you are on Disability Allowance with no wait period. As long as you have been signing on for the past year and are on one of these payments, you are eligible.
While on Tús, you get a top-up to your social payment to a minimum of €259.50. Any of the other payments you receive are not affected so if you receive a medical card, fuel allowance etc, nothing changes. You would also still get the Christmas bonus and any cost-of-living payments.
If you are under 25 your social welfare payment is doubled.

I was unemployed for about 2 years when I was asked did I want to interview for a Tús year long work placement. I attended an interview with a Tús supervisor in Cherry Orchard Equine Centre who was running the Helping Hands Care and Repair service. In March 2019, I was offered a placement as a driver-cum-general operative. I worked closely with Mick Kelly, supervisor, and the Helping Hands team. During that time, I regained my confidence. When I finished my placement, I got a part-time position driving for the community Covid-19 emergency response ran by the BCP and DCC
Before joining the Tús programme, I would have lived a very quiet existence coming and going about my own daily routine. In January 2018, I was referred by the DEASP to meet with a Tús team supervisor to discuss possible placements working on a Tús placement for 19.5 hours per week. I met with Charmaine, a Tús Team Leader, in Ballyfermot Chapelizod Partnership (Liffey Partnership) and we had an informal chat about the benefits of Tús and a placement as a maintenance person she had in the Ballyfermot Family Resource Centre. At first, I was not sure the programme was for me but looking back now it was the best move for me and the many people I have met during my year there that had completed a Tús programme as well. Working in the Ballyfermot Resource Centre gave me a new lease of life, and a routine which was something that was missing for a long time. The management and staff were really friendly and welcoming. During that year, I made some really good friends and even went back when my year was up to go onto a Community Employment Programme. If I am ever asked why I became a Tús participant, it was not just because the Social wanted me to do something but because it was meant for me and I am so glad I took up the position and would highly recommend Tús to anyone able to do it.
I have always been interested in the area of addiction studies; having seen the damage it has done to communities throughout the country. I met with one of the BCP Tús team and I explained to her that I was very interested in the work that Ballyfermot Star were doing, as it was addiction related. I met with them shortly after and I was offered the role of support worker. I was delighted, as now not only could I gain 12 months experience, but I could also study to gain my full qualification in addiction studies at the same time. I found the Tús program really helpful, it allowed me to ease myself back into work and my confidence increased. I am now working in a job I love!
I registered in 2022 with LAES, I found them to be very friendly from reception to my guidance officer, since being with them I have now secured a place on Tús programme as a receptionist with Rehab Care, which I am very excited about and due to start 27th February 2023 which will enable me to gain the experience and confidence I need to progress and have been assured that my guidance officer will be in regular contact with me throughout the programme.
